HC seeks status of affected shop keepers’ rehabilitation

JAMMU, June 4: In a petition filed by 25 shop-keepers of Miran Sahib, whose shops were dismantled in 2008 for widening of Satwari-Airport-RS Pura Road, Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir issued notice to the State through Chief Secretary, Commissioner Secretary PWD, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Managing Director J&K Industries Ltd, Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Chief Engineer PWD and others returnable within four weeks. The High Court also directed the respondents to file status of the steps taken for rehabilitation of the petitioners.
The petitioners submitted that they were running their shops at Miran-Sahib for the last more than five decades and the same were dismantled in the year 2008 for widening of the road. At that time they were given an assurance that they will be rehabilitated by providing alternate shops in the new rehabilitation complex.
During the Course of arguments, Advocate Irfan Mohd Khan appearing for the petitioners submitted that despite categoric orders of the Chief Minister and number of assurances from higher officials, the proposed rehabilitation complex has not been constructed so far and the petitioners are suffering due to non-availability of their source of livelihood.
