SRINAGAR, Sept 24: Division Bench of State High Court comprising Justice M H Attar and Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey today directed the State to issue necessary orders within two weeks for providing benefit of a scheme of the Social Welfare Department to lakhs of needy and poor girls.
After perusal of status report, the DB observed, “we hope and trust that for the welfare of these identified poor girls, the state will not lose any further time in implementing the directions of the court and will issue necessary orders within two weeks”.
“The number of poor unmarried girls who have crossed 40 years of age identified by Social Welfare Department is about 4 lakh and this really shocks us deep down to our conscience”, DB observed.
Advocate General submitted before the Division Bench that two draft Government orders have been forwarded to Finance Department and assured that in the interest of these poor girls the State will comply with the court orders and issue necessary orders within two weeks.
The order with regard to betterment of poor girls was challenged by previous Government before Supreme Court by way of SLP which came to be dismissed with the direction to the State Government to give effect to the directions given by the High Court for Comprehensive Scheme for betterment of the girls in accordance with Article 21 of the Constitution.
Earlier, the High Court had asked the authorities to provide an amount of Rs 25000 each and 5 gms of gold to the identified girls for their dignified life.
