‘Monsoon may reach J&K on June 27-28’

JAMMU, June 17: The heat wave has wrecked havoc in Jammu with the mercury rising up to 44.3 degrees Celsius while Srinagar’s temperature has increased from 30 deg C to 33.4 in just past two days.

The scorching hot weather conditions, with high intensity of Ultra-Violet radiations, has forced the people to stay in-doors in Jammu and parts of Kathua and Samba, which are also experiencing severe hot weather conditions.
A MeT spokesman said that Jammu today recorded a day temperature of 44.3 degrees Celsius, the second highest of the season so far, as compared to 43.7 deg C yesterday, while it was just 43.0 deg C on Saturday. Jammu’s temperature on Monday was nearly 5.9 degrees above normal. The minimum temperature, however, remained 28.8 deg C in Jammu today, which is also 3.3 deg C above normal. During mid day, Jammu witnessed, almost abandoned roads and lanes with the movement of a very few vehicles.
Chief Scientist from SKUAST Jammu, Dr Mahender Singh said that Jammu today witnessed second highest temperature of the season so far. He said from tomorrow a little drop in the temperature will be observed with the expectations of pre-Monsoon showers at some places across J&K.
Singh further said that from June 20 onwards, the temperature will again rise with no major change in the weather for a few days. The Monsoon is expected to enter J&K by June 27-28, he added.
The MeT office further said that Srinagar City recorded a maximum temperature of 33.4 degrees C today as compared to 32.2 degrees C on Sunday. The summer capital recorded a maximum temperature of 30.0 deg C on Saturday. The minimum temperature, however, remained 15.9 degrees C in the City on Monday.
The MeT said the highest temperature of 46.0 degrees C was recorded in Hamirpur City of PoJK on Monday as compared to 45.8 deg C on Sunday. Leh City recorded a maximum temperature of 24.2 deg C and minimum 8.9 degrees Celsius today.
The holy township of Katra Mata Vaishnodevi recorded a maximum temperature of 40.8 degrees C today as compared to 40.2 degrees C on Sunday and a minimum 26.0 deg C. The day temperature remained 5.8 degrees above normal for the place on this day of the season.
Tourist resort of Bhaderwah in Jammu region recorded a maximum temperature of 36.7 deg C temperature on Monday as compared to 34.6 deg on Sunday. It was 6.7 deg C above normal today while the minimum temperature remained as 16.4 deg C.
Batote town recorded a maximum temperature of 34.2 deg C today as compared to 33.7 degrees on Sunday and minimum 19.8 while highway town of Banihal a day temperature of 34.3 degrees and a night temperature of 14.2 degrees C on Sunday.
Famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in Kashmir today recorded a maximum temperature of 21.2 degrees Celsius and minimum 11.2 degrees; Pahalgam tourist resort in Kashmir a day temperature of 28.5 degrees C and night temperature of 8.0 deg C.
Qazigund, a highway town of South Kashmir recorded a maximum temperature of 32.6 deg C on Sunday, which is 5.6 deg C above normal for the place on this day, however, the minimum temperature at Qazigund remained 12 deg C today.
Frontier town of Kupwara recorded a maximum temperature of 31.4 deg C and minimum 12.3 deg while Kokernag had a day temperature of 30.7 deg C and night temperature of 14.7 degrees C on Sunday.
The MeT office has not predicted major change in the weather across J&K during next two days.
