RAJOURI, Aug 10: Torrential rains over the weekend led to severe traffic disruptions in Rajouri district. Friday and Saturday night, heavy rainfall triggered three major landslides on the Rajouri- Budhal road, particularly in the Nagrota area.
The landslides, which occurred within a 500-meter radius, caused significant amounts of debris to block the road, halting traffic movement for several hours today.
The prolonged traffic jam severely impacted many government employees and teachers traveling to Kotranka and other nearby areas, causing delays in their arrival at work. The removal of debris took approximately 3 to 4 hours, exacerbating the difficulties faced by commuters.
In addition to the landslides, the Khewra area of Rajouri experienced significant issues due to overflowing local drains. The excess water from the drains flowed on the roads, resulting in extensive damage to public properties. Several shops in the area suffered losses as the drain water entered their premises, destroying goods stored inside.
Local residents, including Aftab Ahmed and Naresh Kumar, reported that the intensity of the rainfall felt like a cloudburst. The heavy rains also damaged agricultural lands, compounding the challenges faced by the community.
Authorities are currently assessing the damage and working to clear the affected areas to restore normalcy. Efforts are underway to address the immediate concerns of those impacted by these unprecedented weather conditions, an official said.
