Heavy rains: water enters many houses

JAMMU, Aug 20: The rain water entered many houses in Kathua, Samba, Jammu and other areas and traffic was disrupted on many routes in view of flash flood in nallahs and rivers and landslides after heavy downpour in the region during early hours today.
The flood water in Ujh, Ravi, Tarnah and Basanter besides other streams and nallahs created havoc and caused damage to standing crop besides causing land erosion. The traffic on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway was disrupted for about an hour near Chenab Textiles Mills and Lakhanpur in Kathua due to flash flood and water logging in the morning. The water level was 3-4 ft on National Highway near CTM. Many light and medium vehicles remained stranded on the highway for more than two hours. In the absence of  proper drainage system, the water logging problem often takes place at this point during rains. Near Lakhanpur also, the movement of traffic was disrupted due to flash flood.
The traffic on Lakhanpur- Basohli road near Basantpur and  Phinter-Udhampur road near  Ujh bridge remained suspended for about two-three hours due to flash flood in nallahs enroute  and landslides, while Basohli-Bani and  Billawar-Mechhedi and Katli roads have been closed due to landslides at several places. Several other link roads have also been closed due to rains.
In Ward No. 15 and 11 of Kathua town, the flood water entered many houses and caused extensive damage to the public property. The people also lodged their protest against the MC and Highway authorities for their failure to ensure proper drainage system. These people from Shiv Nagar and Kalibari came out on Highway and disrupted movement of traffic for about half an hour. Later, the police intervened and ensured the movement of traffic.
At Mareen village in Hiranagar and Kotha village near Nagri also, the water entered the houses of the people and caused damage to the property. At village Kishanpur near Channi, house of one Uttam Chand collapsed. No loss of life was reported but his household items were buried under the debris.
In Jammu city, the water entered in the houses of people at Preet Nagar, Gangyal, Nanak Nagar and Nai Basti areas causing damage to the public property. The water logging at Bari Brahmana, Jewel Chowk, Science College area and other localities caused traffic disruption during morning hours today.
At Bassi Kallan village near Bari Brahmana, the rain water entered the Govt School and nearly three dozen houses of the people in the locality. Similar reports were received from Bishnah, Miran Sahib and R S Pura towns of  Jammu district.
A report from Samba said that at village Mawa, the rain water entered the houses of many people. The irate villagers came out on the road and held protest. They disrupted movement of traffic on border road for about two hours.
In several villages of Khour and Pallanwalla, flooded Manawar Tawi created havoc and caused damage. The water also entered many houses in this belt.
