SRINAGAR, Jan 23: The introduction of helicopter joy rides has injected new life into the snowless landscape of the renowned ski destination, Gulmarg, offering tourists a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of the snow-capped mountain peaks.
Despite the disappointment among snow enthusiasts due to the lack of snowfall, the addition of helicopter rides has provided a unique and enjoyable experience in otherwise snowless Gulmarg. To alleviate the disappointment caused by the absence of snowfall and dry weather in Gulmarg, Abdul Majeed Bakshi, a visionary entrepreneur, launched a helicopter service for tourists to relish the beauty of Sunshine Peak and Afferwat Peak. “This initiative is attracting several tourists eager to explore these high peaks and witness the natural beauty from the skies,” he said.

Since the commencement of helicopter joyrides on January 13, Bakshi has witnessed an overwhelming response from domestic tourists, drawn by the allure of snow-covered mountain peaks. “with fresh snowfall, heliskiing will commence and attract foreign skiers.”
The cost for each helicopter ride is approximately Rs 13,000 per person, offering a thrilling adventure to visitors like Deepak Kumar from Delhi. Initially disappointed by the lack of snow, Kumar’s spirits were lifted as he boarded the helicopter. “This was simply excellent. The view of the snow-capped mountains above was simply breathtaking,” he said.
Reflecting on the evolution of his heliskiing business, Bakshi acknowledges a shift in clientele from professional skiers to domestic tourists seeking joy rides. He envisions Gulmarg as a premier ski and joy destination but expresses concern about the influx of vehicles through the tourist spot.
Bakshi advocates for the installation of a Gondola from Tangmarg to Gulmarg and the restriction of vehicle entry to truly transform Gulmarg into a serene ski resort.
