Helping martyrs’ families

Sir,
This has reference to the news item’IAS Officers to adopt martyr’s families'(DE, Apr 29, 2017).It is heartening to read that in a unique voluntary  initiative, IAS officers have decided to adopt families of the security personnel who lost their lives in Maoist combat, anti-terror operations or maintaining law and order. In a noble and appreciable gesture, the officers will approach such families within their area of posting and offer themselves as facilitators to help the affected families get their dues such as pension, gratuity or allotment of services such as petrol pumps, jobs etc announced by the government on their martyrdom. The association representing all the members of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) has  asked the officers to adopt at least one such  family and oversee that  support in cash and kind  announced by the state or local Government have been provided to the concerned families.
There is no doubt that our brave security personnel  perform their duties in tough circumstances and hostile weather conditions to  defend our borders, protect their countrymen from militants or anti national elements or to maintain law and order in our country. But while discharging their duties, some of them make the supreme sacrifice of their life and are martyred leaving behind their wives, children and parents. What happens is that Governments pledge various types of financial and other aid in favour of their kiths and kins and their death is widely mourned but as time passes, their sacrifices are forgotten and their dependents have to run from pillar to post to get their dues. Therefore, it becomes the duty of all the  countrymen to remember their sacrifice and render all help to their families. The fact that IAS officers hold immense influence on the local administrative machinery , they can use this influence in a positive manner to provide relief and succour to the affected families in an effective manner. They have also decided to  ensure that the children of the martyrs’ families pursue their education according to their aptitude and talent and that they get benefits under schemes such as Skill India, Start up India etc.The Association deserves all appreciation for this noble initiative and other organisations ought to emulate this endeavour.
Yours etc…..
