Heritage cum Alumni Meet

Sir,
This has reference to the news item’GGM Science College organises Heritage-cum-Alumni Meet'(DE, Nov 20, 2016). It is really heartening to read that the Heritage-cum-Alumni Club of  GGM Science College Jammu organised  a Heritage cum Alumni Meet in the premises of the college and alumni from different walks of life attended the Meet and shared the memories of their college days.Turning nostalgic and emotional, they gave credit of their success to their teachers and promised to work wholeheartedly for the overall devlopment of the college and the students.Alumini Meet is an important activity which helps a lot in forging strong bond between the institution and its alumni.Alumni Meets should be organised in every educational institution, especially in Heritage schools and Colleges as also in universities to showcase their growth and develpoment and recreate their past glory.Such meets also serve as an ocassion to provide an opportunity to the young students to interact with the alumni and aquaint themselves with those times when they studied. Those alumni who have excelled in different fields and brought laurels to their alma mater should be felicitated  to serve as an inspiration for the young minds.Alumini, on their part , ought to contribute financially and otherwise, to the institution in order to ensure its development to new heights.Only the other day, the Education Minister, Naeem Akhter and Minister for Rural Development, Panchayti Raj and Justice,Abdul Haq visited the Central Basic Higher Sec School, Purani Mandi, which has produced many distinguished personalities and has among its alumni, the present Chief Justice of India, T S Thakur and directed for immediate face lifting of  the school and providing furniture to the school.Such schools and colleges are the proud heritage of our state and earnest efforts must be made to preserve and conserve this heritage and maintain their glory. These institutions need to be developed as centres of  excellence and highly dedicated, experienced and motivated faculty as best infrastructural facilities such as smart rooms, well equipped labs and libraries should be provided to these institutions. The rare items of old record ought to be displayed in exhibitions  during Alumini Meet and photographs of distinguished alumni and Heads of instituion should be prominently displayed in Library, Office, Principal’s chamber or in Archival Room of the instituion.Special funds should be alloted to these schools and colleges and Ministry of culture, Archives Department  and ASI should also be roped in this noble endeavour.
