High impotence rate in diabetes: Dr Jitendra

KOCHI, Apr 19:  Addressing the prime session of three-day “Diabetes India” International Conference on its opening day here today, Dr Jitendra Singh ,National Professor of Diabetes and Chairman National Scientific Committee (RSSDI), said that if 21st century management of Diabetes is aimed at ensuring normal quality of life for all diabetics, then the treatment of neuropathy or nerve disease in Diabetes ought to be a top priority because its symptoms remain largely unattended and unreported even though it is responsible for impotence or erectile dysfunction in large majority of men suffering from Diabetes.
At the conference, which took off earlier with a formal inauguration in the presence of President-elect of International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Dr S M Sadikot and President-elect Association of Physicians of India (API) Dr Shashank Joshi, Dr Jitendra Singh said, gone are the days when a Diabetic was left to suffer in silence either because he was too shy to complain or the treatment options were lacking.
From the shores of Kochi waters in what is popularly known as God’s own land of Kerala, Dr Jitendra Singh said, “let us take the pledge that no diabetic shall hereafter have to feel like a God’s “lesser” child.
Spelling out broad principles of management of diabetic neuropathy, Dr Jitendra Singh said that strict control of Blood Sugar level is the first prerequisite because it alleviates lot of nerve related symptoms without any further medication. In the last few years, several new diagnostic evaluation procedures and new drugs for treatment have become available, he said and stressed on regular follow up with Diabetologist and daily self-examination of feet as a preventive measure.
