High mortality rate of Bee colonies in J&K due to lack of expertise, starvation

SRINAGAR:  Lack of expertise and starvation besides presence of wasps are some of the reasons for high mortality rate of Bee colonies in Jammu and Kashmir.

This information was given by Minister for Agriculture Ghulam Nabi Lone in reply to a question by Usman Majid in the Legislative Assembly today.

He said 665 Bee colonies and Hives were purchased at the rate of Rs 3150 per colony with hive and provided free of cost to the affected farmers whose colonies got perished.

The Minister said there are some reasons for high mortality rate of Bee colonies, including starvation (lack of stored pollen and nectar) because of unfavourable weather conditions, presence of wasps and aggressive predators of Bees and lack of expertise of farmers to handle the bee colonies.

This, he said, has been endorsed by S K University of Agriculture Science and Technology, Kashmir, in response to an inquiry ordered by District Development Commissioner, Bandipora. He said the farmers were provided free Bee colonies in the month of May as division of Bee colonies is mainly done in the month of April and May in Kashmir division.  (AGENCIES)
