High time to go for GI tagging of Kashmiri apples: CII

SRINAGAR, Aug 27: CII J&K today organized a virtual interaction on AGRIHORT J&K “Re- Boot and Re- Imagine J&K’s Agri/ Horticulture” for progressive farmers and budding food processing enterprises.
Bashir Ahmad Dar, MD J&K SIDCO articulated the government policies and reforms to boost Agri/ Horticulture and Food Processing Industries in J&K.
Dr Ramesh Mittal, Director, National Institute of Agriculture and Marketing (NIAM) in his address illustrated the need for branding and marketing J&K’s Agri/ Horticulture by focusing on the Geographical Indications for the Niche products of J&K including Apples, Shahi Jeera, Organic Rajma, etc.
A K Singh, Deputy Director, National Horticulture Board appraised various Schemes under the National Horticulture Board for the progressive farmers and the budding entrepreneurs. He requested CII for such furthermore interactions to create familiarization and awareness of subsidies and schemes provided to boost horticulture sector of J&K.
Chirag Jain, Director- Public Sector, Grant Thornton talked about the trends and opportunities in Agri/ Horticulture of J&K. Various schemes available for agro-processing clusters, Micro Food Processing Enterprises and Cold chain schemes by MoFPI, APEDA and SFAC were also discussed.
Kaustav Saha, CEO, Seven3 Digital Pvt. Ltd shared his views on algorithm-driven solutions to improve crop production and how the challenges in the sector can be controlled by automation tools. Arjimand H Talib, Founder Ziraat Times necessitated the strengthening of infrastructure including transportation, Post- harvest storage and Communication facilities for the development of Agri/ Horticulture in the newly carved UT.
Earlier, while welcoming speakers and participants, Farooq Amin, Chairman, CII J&K stated that the involvement of the population is more in Agriculture and Horticulture activities and hence there is a need to increase the productivity, quality and bring in technologies for transforming value chains of this sector.
