Highway through for one-way despite landslides last night

SRINAGAR : The national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through for one-way traffic despite fresh landslides last night. A traffic police official told UNI this morning that there were fresh landslides in Ramban area, forcing closure of the highway last night.
However, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) , responsible for the maintenance of the highway, immediately put into service sophisticated men and machines and cleared the landslides during the night.
”We got the information this morning that the road was through for one-way and traffic will ply from Jammu to Srinagar,” he said, adding that hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying essentials, left different parts of the Jammu region for Kashmir valley.
He said only one-way traffic will continue on the highway till further orders as BRO is still working to clear all the hurdles to allow two-way traffic before the increase in the tourist rush.
Meanwhile, snow clearance operation was continuing on a war-footing on the national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir valley.
The road is closed since December due to accumulation of more than 10 feet of snow at Zojla pass and other places. The BRO had already started snow clearance operation last month on both sides of the Zojila pass. However, there was fresh snowfall recently, hampering the snow clearance operation. (AGENCIES)
