Hindrances in water sports activities at KU

Kashmir University is facing a critical issue of encroachment on its land by houseboat owners, which is hindering water sports activities. Despite numerous attempts to resolve the issue, no progress has been made, and the involvement of employees in the area has complicated the matter. The issue has been pending for years and requires immediate attention and intervention. The university administration has engaged in discussions with local authorities to take appropriate action against the illegal encroachment. However, political interference and a lack of progress have prompted officials to request a thorough investigation into the matter. The houseboat owners are willing to vacate the land, provided they receive suitable rehabilitation options.
Kashmir has a rich history of producing outstanding players in various water sports such as rowing, canoeing, and kayaking. The state’s abundant water resources have provided an ideal platform for nurturing and promoting water sports. Kashmir University has also been a hub for such activities, providing training and opportunities to aspiring athletes. Kashmir has hosted several national and international events, including the All India Inter-University Kayaking and Canoeing Championship and the 23rd sub-junior and 5th Inter-State Challenger National Rowing Championship. It is important to take timely action and resume water sports activities to continue the rich legacy of Kashmir in this field.
This incident highlights that encroachment has occurred with the support of local authorities who prioritise their own interests. This nexus between politicians, local authorities, and encroachers disrupts the city master plan and harms the environment. The LG administration has repeatedly assured that encroachments will not be allowed and existing encroachments will be removed. Water sports are crucial, and Kashmir University is a hub for such activities. Any hindrance to student activities must be given priority. To set an example, officials responsible for the hindrance must be held accountable. Immediate action should be taken to resume water sports activities.
