JAMMU, Sept 6: The Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) treatment is now available at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital (SMVDNSH) for abdominal cancer patients.
The HIPEC is a highly concentrated, heated chemotherapy treatment that is delivered directly to the abdomen during surgery. The procedure treats tumours in the abdominal (peritoneal) lining that stem from colon, gastric, ovarian, appendix tumours, mesothelioma and other cancers.
The surgical procedure generally lasts 9-16 hours, involves multiple procedures, complete peritonectomies and multi-organ resections and reconstructions. The department performed the first Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC last year and has subsequently strengthened the procedures and protocols.

Two such surgeries were performed at SMVDNSH in the recent past, involving complete resection and HIPEC. Both patients were diagnosed with stage III carcinoma of ovaries and successfully underwent the procedure. It was the first time HIPEC was done for 90 minutes and on a patient above 70 years of age.
According to Dr Sandeep Kaul, “With HIPEC, the probability of a successful outcome increases significantly. Through this procedure, the chemotherapy is infused directly to the cancer site in higher concentrations immediately following specialized surgery to first remove as much of the cancerous tissues as possible, a process called cytoreduction. The heat enhances the chemotherapy’s penetration into the cancerous tissues. We believe that CRS and HIPEC are the best options available for stage III or IV patients”.  The advantages of HIPEC procedure are that it allows for high doses of chemotherapy, it enhances and concentrates chemotherapy within the abdomen, it minimizes the rest of the body’s exposure to the chemotherapy, it improves chemotherapy absorption and susceptibility of cancer cells and it also reduces some chemotherapy side effects.
Dr (Brig) Man Mohan Harjai, the Chief Administrative Officer of SMVDNSH, said that the hospital is first of its kind in the State of Jammu and Kashmir to offer Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC treatment for advanced stage abdominal cancer in three cases with a successful outcome.
Dr. Suneet Marwah, CEO of SMVDNSH, said that such extensive procedures require teamwork between surgical oncologist, anaesthesiologist and intensive care team which is available at SMVDNSH.
