SRINAGAR, Jan 9: A Hizbul Mujahideen militant was killed in an encounter in Kokernag area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district today while a protester was killed as security forces fired at them in the area. Click here to watch video
Police along with 19RR of Army and CRPF cordon off Pehlipora village of Larnoo in Kokernag area of South Kashmir today after reports of presence of two militants hiding there. Militants fired at the security forces during the searches and they retaliated leading to an encounter.
One militant was killed in the encounter who was identified as Farhan Ahmad Wani son of Ghulam Mohammad Wani, resident of Redwani Khudwani, Kulgam.
“One INSAS rifle, two INSAS magazines and 42 rounds were recovered from the encounter site,” police said, adding that the slain militant was a hardcore stone pelter and a case FIR number 45/17 of Kulgam under Sections 147, 148, 149, 336, 332, 307 RPC was registered.
“He was also involved in many anti national/social and unlawful activities. Cases under Sections 10, 11, 13 ULAP Act have already been registered against him in Police Station Kulgam,” Police said.
As soon as the news about the killing of the spread, the clashes reported in his native village Khudwani in Kulgam.
The protesters took to streets and pelted stones on the security forces who tried to quell the protesters. Two protesters were hit by bullets during the clashes. One of them has been identified as Khalid Ahmad Dar, 20, a resident of Khudwani in Kulgam district. He was rushed to District Hospital Kulgam for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries.
A police spokesman said: “Two civilians sustained bullet injuries when a mob pelted stones on the Army camp located at Khudwani. Reportedly some unidentified militants from the mob also fired some shots towards the Army camp.”
The spokesman said: “In the said incident one civilian namely Khalid Ahmed Dar, 22, who received a bullet injury on his neck succumbed at DH Anantnag. The other one namely Yasir Ahmed Dar, 30, of Khudwani with shoulder injury is stated to be stable. In this connection case FIR no 5/2018 has been registered at P/S Kulgam and investigation has been set into motion”.
In the meantime, police arrested two militants and busted an Over Ground Worker (OGW) module by arresting its nine members who were trying to recruit youth into militancy.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Sopore, Harmeet Singh, today said that acting on a specific information regarding the presence of militants in general area of Watlab, a cordon and search operation was launched by Sopore Police along with MARCOS of Navy and CRPF two days ago.
“During search operation, two terrorists who were hiding near a school tried to open fire on the joint party but were overpowered and arrested. These terrorists were identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Chopan alias Haroon son of Ghulam Mohammad Chopan, resident of Wagad, Tral and Shija-ud-din Sheikh son of  Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Sheikh, resident of Dadsara, Tral affiliated with banned outfit HM”, he said.
The SSP said that one AK47 rifle, one AK magazine, 15  AK rounds, one pistol, one pistol magazine, three pistol rounds and a hand grenade was recovered from their possession. A case (FIR number 10/2018 under Section 7/25 A Act) was registered in Police Station Sopore and investigation was started.
He said that during the course of investigation, the names of nine persons surfaced who are working as conduits of these militants and they have been motivated to join the terrorist ranks. “These conduits are in contact with the terrorists of South Kashmir namely Reyaz Naikoo and Hamaad of HM and Ali and Qasim of JeM”, he said.
He said that Sopore Police along with MARCOS, 22 RR and CRPF arrested these nine OGW’s working with HM and JeM. They were identified as Tajam-ul-Islam Shah son of Mohammad Maqtoob Shah resident of Dangerpora Sopore, Syed Tamiz-ud-Din son of Syed Mohi-ud-Din resident of Dangerpora Sopore, Ghulam Nabi Mir son of Mohammad Akbar Mir resident of Iqbal Nagar Sopore, Mudasir Ahmad Mir son of Mohammad Akbar Mir resident of Iqbal Nagar Sopore, Saleem Ahmad Beigh son of Mushtaq Ahmad Beigh resident of Sheikh Sahib Sopore, Muzamil Ahmad Ganie son of Ghulam Hassan Ganie resident of Sheikh Sahib Sopore, Showket Ahmad Kaboo son of Ali Mohammad Kaboo resident of Arampora Sopore, Irshad Ahmad Lone son of Abdul Rashid Lone resident of Seer Tral and Humaiz resident of Kupwara.
The SP said that mobile phones, letter pads, posters, recruitment forms, and other incriminating documents were recovered from these OGWs.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has expressed deep anguish over the killing of a youth namely Khalid Hussain Dar of Redwani Payeen of tehsil Qoimoh of Kulgam district today.
The Chief Minister has directed the district administration to conduct a probe to know the reasons of the killing and come up with a report at the earliest.
Accordingly, the Deputy Commissioner, Kulgam, Talat Parvez has appointed Additional District Development Commissioner, Kulgam as the inquiry officer to ascertain the facts about the death of the said youth. He has been asked to submit a report with two weeks.
