Hort Deptt organizes training for students

JAMMU, July 2: On instructions by Director Horticulture, Ram Sevak, the Department of Horticulture Poonch organized one day training cum awareness programme for students of ITI College Poonch.
The training was held under the guidance of Sanjeev Kumar, Chief Horticulture Officer Poonch and Rakesh Kumar, Horticulture Development Officer (HDO) Poonch.
More than 50 students participated in the training wherein different post harvest management techniques were discussed.
The Chief Horticulture Officer emphasized on processing, packaging, grading, branding of various processed products like plum jam, pickles, apricot squash and jam, ginger tonic, sauces etc as these fruits are locally available.
The HDO talked on the importance and scope of Post Harvest Management.
Horticulture Development Officers Sathra and Mendhar were also present on this occasion. Other officials who delivered lectures were Anjana Sharma and Nargis Bano.
They talked on processing and preparation of mango pickle and plum jam practically.
As Post Harvest losses in Poonch District are near about 30 to 40 per cent, same can be prevented by the method of processing.
The Fruit is grown in abundant amount with a production of 26024.80 Mt tones from an area of 18601 Ha in district Poonch. In rural areas of Poonch many families are totally dependent upon fruit cultivation like Apples, Plum, Apricot etc and processing of these fruits can increase their income.
The students were surprised to know benefits of post harvest products and how to generate income from them.
They were also acknowledged with different schemes of Horticulture Department like Plantation, Ultra High Density Plantation of Apples, Pack House, Bore Well, Machinery and equipments and other schemes in which subsidy for different incentives is provided by the Department of Horticulture.
