Horticulture, allied sectors tagged as thrust areas: Bhalla

JAMMU, Jan 27: Asserting that Government  has tagged horticulture and allied activities as a thrust sector, Minister for Housing, Horticulture and Culture, Raman Bhalla today asked the concerned functionaries to adopt a proactive approach in order to tap the huge potential.
The Minister said this during his visit to Fruit and Vegetable Market, Daskal Akhnoor. He took stock of the progress of work at the site of Vegetable and Fruit market here. He also inspected the site for Fruit Mandi at Sunderbani and directed the officers to clear all bottleneck for early execution of construction work of the Mandi.
MLC Ravinder Sharma also accompanied the Minister while Director Horticulture Jammu Anil Kumar Sharma, DC Rajouri Hemant Kumar, DIG Poonch Rajouri Danish Rana, SSP Rajouri Mubbasir Latifi, Chief Horticulture Officer Y. Kesar, other senior officers of concerned department were also present.
Bhalla asked the officers to educate the farmers about various Centrally and State sponsored schemes. He said that attention needs to be given to the production of quality horticulture produce and its safe export to the terminal markets to ensure substantial returns to the farmers and fruit growers.
He said that state economy was primarily rural and agriculture and its allied activities, including agriculture and horticulture   are major areas providing livelihood to the people. He said and highlighted the significance of these sectors in the overall development of the state.
Elaborating on the scope of these sectors, the Minister said that agro-based small industries promise substantial and viable avenues for budding entrepreneurs of the state to venture upon and earn handsome livelihood not only for them self but for others also. He said Central and State Government s have introduced various schemes to encourage investment in this sector.
