Hottest day of season in Srinagar at 35°C, Met says respite from today

Srinagar, June 23: Kashmir continues to reel under heat wave with temperature soaring into season’s high today with Srinagar settling at 35°C equalling warmest June day in a decade.
The administration is contemplating to pre-pone the summer vacations which are slated for July. However, a Meteorological Department said that there is going to be respite from current heat wave from June 24 onwards.
Regarding the forecast on June 24, he said,  generally cloudy weather is expected with light rain and thunderstorms at scattered places of Jammu and few places of Kashmir Division.
From June 25-28, he said, generally cloudy weather with intermittent light to moderate thundershower was expected at many places.
The official said that the maximum temperature in Srinagar rose to 35.0°C and it was 5.8°C above normal for the season.
Today’s temperature surpassed the previous highest of 34.8°C recorded only yesterday and it equalled the warmest day in June in a decade. Barring 3 June 2018 when mercury had also increased to 35.0°C, never in a decade the mercury has soared to such scale in the capital city.
Other places including Pahalgam settled at seasons high of 30.0°C, Qazigund 34.2°C, Kokernag 33.7°C, Kupwara 33.5°C and Gulmarg 25.0°C also recorded sweltering weather conditions.
Kokernag recorded the warmest June day in more than decade. Pahalgam recorded the season’s second warmest June day in the last ten years and it was on 9 June 2021 when mercury had soared above 30.0°C at the tourist destination.
Regarding the minimum temperature, Srinagar recorded a low of 21.0°C against 20.5°C on the previous night and it was above normal by 5.2°C for the city.
Qazigund recorded a low of 19.0°C against 17.2°C on the previous night and it was above normal by 4.7°C for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of 10.6°C against 11.3°C on the previous night and it was 1.5°C above normal for the place.
In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 17.8°C against 17.4°C on the previous night and it was above normal by 3.7°C for the town.
Kokernag recorded a low of 19.3°C against 17.7°C on the previous night and it was 5.2°C above normal for the place.
Gulmarg recorded a low of 15.4°C against 13.5°C on previous night and it was above normal by 5.2°C for the world famous skiing resort.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri today said that the announcement of summer vacation in schools and colleges will be taken after Sunday.
Speaking to reporters, Bidhuri said that the Government was monitoring the weather situation and will take call on summer vacation soon.
According to the Director of School Education, Tassaduq Hussain, they are closely monitoring the situation, and if the heat continues, they will advance the summer vacation before July 1st.
