UDHAMPUR, Mar 3: Several houses were damaged and the people had to be evacuated from their homes after major landslides hit the area of Chubbu Nullah, three kilometers short of Panchari from Udhampur, yesterday.
Five houses were completely damaged and more than 15 others developed cracks while a stretch of around 400 meters road subsided due to sliding of Chubbu Nullah following heavy rains in the area, Deputy Commissioner Udhampur P K Pole told Excelsior.
However, he added, there was no loss of life and the affected people have been evacuated to safer areas while the relief work was on.
To assess situation following the natural calamity, Divisional Commissioner Jammu personally rushed to the spot along with other senior officers while the Minister for Roads and Buildings Abdul Majid Wani, the Minister of State for Revenue and Relief Aijaz Ahmed Khan and the Minister of State for Home Sajjad Ahmed Kitchloo conducted an aerial survey of the area today.
After conducting the aerial survey, the Ministers convened a high level meeting at the District Police Line Udhampur and issued necessary instructions for relief and rehabilitation work for the affected people.
Divisional Commissioner Jammu Pardeep Gupta also visited the spot to take stock of relief and rehabilitation measures being made by the district administration. He was accompanied by MLA Chenani Krishan Chander Bhagat and DC Udhampur, P K Pole.
The affected people have been provided emergency relief, which included tents, blankets, utensils, ration and Rs 5000 to the each family, said Mr Pole.
Besides evacuating people, sources said, idols in a temple near the landslide hit area have also been shifted to some safer place.
The Chief Engineer PWD, heading a team, has also been dispatched to the site to ascertain the damage caused due to the slip slide and to fast track relief and restoration work. Superintending Engineer PWD, Additional DC, Additional SP and district officers of various departments are camping in the area.
According to the villagers, the seasonal Chubbu Nullah used to get blocked during heavy rains thus leading to landslides. Following incessant rains in the area last week, the nullah got blocked again and the natural calamity hit the area, they added.
“We have requested Geology and Mining Department to depute a team for visiting the area and suggest long term measures to solve the problem so that such natural calamities could be avoided here,” Mr Pole said.
