‘Housing for All’ Urban Mission to start from Baramulla, Udhampur towns

JAMMU, Apr 22: Chief Secretary, B R Sharma today chaired the 1st meeting of the State Level Sanctioning-cum-monitoring Committee (SLSMC) for implementing ‘Housing for All’ Urban Mission in Jammu and Kashmir.
Financial Commissioner, Planning & Development, B. B. Vyas, Commissioner Secretary, Housing & Urban Development, Hirdesh Kumar and other officers were present in the meeting.
‘Housing for All’ Urban Mission of Prime Minister Awas Yojna (PMAY) was launched in June 2015 by the Prime Minister with an objective to address the housing shortage in States.
As the actual assessment of housing demand in Urban J&K can only be determined after completion of the ongoing survey in this regard, initial rough projections put the number at about 2 lakh dwelling units.
In the 1st phase 2 capital cities and 23 towns in the State have been selected under the Urban Mission. These include Jammu, R S Pura, Samba, Kathua, Basholi, Poonch, Rajouri  Udhampur, Ramban, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah and Doda in Jammu region and Srinagar, Ganderbal, Budgam, Anantnag, Bijbehara, Shopian, Pulwama, Baramulla, Sopore, Handwara and Kupwara in Kashmir region. Besides Leh and Kargil towns of Ladakh region have also been included in the 1st phase.
The Jammu & Kashmir Housing Board has been designated as State Nodal Agency for the implementation of the ‘Housing for All’ mission except in Leh and Kargil where Municipal Committees have been designated as such.
To initiate the implementation of ‘Housing for All’ Urban Mission in the State, the Committee selected Baramulla and Udhampur towns to begin with as the basic data was already available in the Slum Free City Plan of Action ( SFCPoA) of these towns. DPRs of Baramulla and Udhampur town of Rs 830 lakh and Rs 777 lakhs under the beneficiary led individual house construction/ enhancement component were approved by the Committee.
As per the proposed DPRs, 362 beneficiaries in Baramulla and 321 in Udhampur are proposed to be covered. All the beneficiaries belong to economically weaker sections and reside in both slum and non slum areas falling within the limits of Municipal Councils of these towns.
