NEW DELHI : Expressing concern over the shortage of faculty in higher education institutions in the country, a committee of Human Resource Development Ministry has recommended that there should be an increase in the number of research fellowship and introduction of new schemes for teaching assistantship.
The committee points out that there should be appropriate linkages with S and T institutions, joint appointment of teachers and researchers as faculty, and promotions should be linked with performance.
The committee further adds that the department should take steps to enhance the prestige of the teaching profession. The committee is also of the view that stricter norms for the appointment of faculty are coming in the way of filling vacant posts.
The UGC and other regulatory bodies should review the norms on a regular basis and bring in the necessary changes so as to fill the vacant posts at the earliest. The committee has recommended that the government needs to take urgent steps to address this issue within a definite timeframe, and also direct the UGC to submit a report on this matter.
The committee was set up of under the chairmanship of Prof Arun Nigavekar, a former Chairman of the UGC, to study the recommendations made and issues raised by the previous committee. (AGENCIES)
