JAMMU, June 27: Himalayan Unity Movement (HUM) was launched in Jammu & Kashmir after the two days deliberations on Himalayan issues here in the University of Jammu.
Padamshree Dr Anil Joshi, known as Mountain Man, declared that HUM be established in J & K as it is existing in other Himalayan States.
The HUM will bring to fore issues related to Environment and Ecology of J & K State so that the issues pertaining to Himalaya can be give due consideration by the concerned authorities. Dr C M Seth was nominated as president and Dr R K Khajuria as secretary of HUM.
Meanwhile, during the second day of workshop on Science Technology and Community Wisdom: J&K Himalaya, there were three lectures by Dr Susheel Verma of BGSBU, Dr Himani Purohit of HESCO and Dr C M Seth, Advisor on Environmental issues, Central University of Jammu.
In the panel discussion, representatives of various NGOs gave several important suggestions on different environmental issues related to Himalaya and the traditional knowledge which has been lost because of the urbanization and industrialization.
Dr Anil Joshi, founder of HESCO put the emphasis on the local issues where the NGOs were asked to write the small viable project proposals related to these issues. Dr Ketaki Bapat while talking about the role of the RuTAG, put emphasis on the issue of groundwater purification through phytoremediation process. Prof Yash Pal Sharma, HoD Botany, suggested that it is the time for action and everybody should contribute towards achieving the goal of sustainable development.
Prof Manoj K Dhar, Co-ordinator RuTAG Chapter, JU, sought project proposals from NGOs and other organizations which can be considered under the RuTAG mandate and where technology interventions can help in upliftment of the society.
