Human trafficking racket busted

JAMMU, Feb 19: A gang involved in the trafficking of young women was busted by police here on Saturday, a police spokesperson said.
He said, acting on reliable information, a raid was conducted by a team of senior police officers at Bus Stand area here and four people including two men from Myanmar (Burma) and two women including one from Myanmar and another from Kashmir’s Budgam District, were arrested.
“Seven victims including girls as young as 15 years old and, two children have been rescued from the clutches of the accused,” SHO Bus Stand, Inspector Vishal Dogra told the Excelsior.
Police have also recovered a cash amount of Rs 17500 from the accused who have been identified as Mohammad Arif, 16, son of Noor Mohammid of Burma at present Delhi; Mohammad Rafiq, 28, son of Gaffur Ahmed of Burma, at present Delhi; Asma, 25, wife of Nur Samei of Burma at present Delhi and Rohia Akhtar, 30, wife of late Abdul Hamid of Naslapura, Budgam District.
“The victims were meant to be sold in Kashmir for any amount between Rs 10,000 up to Rs 1 lakh,” said the SHO.
Asked whether the accused have any previous history of trafficking women in Kashmir or other parts of India, he said, “only senior police officials can comment on this”.
When contacted, SSP Jammu, Chandan Kohli, said that further details would be shared tomorrow.
The accused have been booked in case FIR number 13/2023 under section 370 of the IPC at Police Station Bus Stand and further investigations taken up.
Meanwhile, the victims of the trafficking have been shifted to the Child Protection Centre Jammu.
Pertinently, there have been multiple instances when Burmese and Bangladeshi girls and women meant to be sold in Kashmir have been rescued by the police either in Jammu or other districts of the Union Territory.
