SRINAGAR, Nov 3: A delegation of 10 media professionals from Hyderabad, led by Dr. Manas Krishnakanth, Deputy Director of the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Hyderabad, commenced a seven-day tour of Kashmir today.
The visit is organized by PIB Hyderabad under the Media Outreach Programme, aiming to provide the visiting journalists with an understanding of various Central Government initiatives in and around the region.
On the first day of the tour, the delegation visited the Common Facilitation Centre for the renowned Kani Shawl weaving in Kanihama, District Budgam, where they had a firsthand opportunity to observe the craftsmanship involved in creating Kashmir’s Kani Shawls.
The visiting press delegation was accompanied by Qazi Salman, Joint Director of PIB Srinagar, along with other PIB Srinagar officials.
The delegation received a briefing on the GI (Geographical Indication) tagging system introduced by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
This system has significantly benefited local artisans, helping preserve traditional craftsmanship while ensuring buyers receive genuine, certified products with detailed information about their origin and quality, the delegation was informed.
Local artisan Sajad Kanihami explained the process of Kani Shawl weaving to the delegation and shared insights into the support provided by the Government of India, which includes GI tagging, the establishment of Common Facilitation Centres, and other initiatives to promote local crafts.
