Ajay Devgn is super excited about his next release – Son of Sardaar (SOS). Sreya Basu chats up
with the actor in Mumbai
You are seen riding two horses at a time in the film.
The credit goes to the horses for carrying off the stunt so well. It’s the horses not me who created a rage. (Laughs)
This stunt has a resemblance to your debut film Phool Aur Kaante (1991) where you were seen balancing yourself on two motorcycles. Which one was more difficult?
Be it Phool Aur Kaante or Son Of Sardaar, both the stunts were difficult. But thankfully bahut achchey se ho gaya.
Your film will be clashing with Yash Chopra’s last directorial venture Jab Tak Hai Jaan at the box office. Are there any apprehension?
Both films will do well.
Son of Sardaar is a remake of hit Telugu movie Maryada Ramanna. How much confident are you about the Hindi version?
I am very confident about the success of Son of Sardaar. The original film was so entertaining that we thought of adapting it. The pace and the way it was made are fabulous. But we made the changes required to make a Hindi film.
Are you doing the sequel to your 2003 film Gangaajal to be directed by Prakash Jha?
I am doing Satyagraha with Prakash Jha. After that, we will think about Gangaajal sequel.
How does it feel when your film crosses the Rs 100 crore mark at the box office?
It undoubtedly feels great when people appreciate your hard work. Every actor wants his film to earn more than Rs 100 crore. But honestly, days before the release of your film, the only thing that worries you is whether the audience will like your film or not.
You did it twice – with Singham (2011) and Bol Bachchan (2012).
Yes, and now I am scared because it puts on a pressure that your next film must do well and at least come close to the mark.
With your signature fighting moves, do you agree it’s the Ajay action Devgn that works best at the box office?
I would say all said and done it’s the film on the whole; of course the team adds to it. And then, your character has to work.
So will you play a sensitive hero who cries and has emotional outbursts?
It depends on the film and characterization. If it is a sensitive film, there is nothing wrong in it. But I don’t think actors like me suit in such characters at all.
Your wife and actress Kajol said in an interview that you are a better father than a husband. Will you agree?
Yes. She always complains that I spend more time with our children (Nysa and Yug) than with her.
Does Nysa watch your films?
Yes and she loves the comedy ones. She doesn’t like to see me fighting.
Unlike other heroes we don’t hear link-ups when it comes to you?
Media has been kind to me. I do my work and go back home to my family, and do nothing more than my work, and hence there are less reasons for people to talk about me.
Who are your ‘good friends’ in Bollywood?
I am friendly to most of the people in the industry, in fact all of them. But I am not a social person. (TWF)
