ICCR Jammu celebrates International Dance Day

JAMMU, Apr 29: Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India, celebrated International Dance Day at its headquarters, here today.
The programme featured a film presentation of the traditional dance forms of Jammu and Kashmir. Regional Director, ICCR Jammu, Balwant Thakur, described in detail about established traditional dances of J&K. While explaining about each traditional dance he described threadbare about ‘Kudd’, ‘Rouf’, ‘Jagarna’, Hafiz Nagma’ and ‘Bachnagama’.
He promised that a similar session will follow and will describe the traditional dance traditions of Ladakhi, Pahari, Gojari, Bhadarwahi and Balti.
About Kud Dance he said that it represents the Reasi and Udhampur regions of J&K. Performed by men and women folk together, Kud usually features during the ‘Yatra evenings and is performed for whole night to please local deities.
‘Jagarna’-a traditional dance of the Jammu Hills was at its best both in terms of its musical score and the dance performance. Performed by women folk, Jagarna has a wonderful traditional background which used to be performed exclusively for women only.
Kashmiri Rouf is almost steeped in antiquity. Rouf is performed on all occasions and particularly during the evenings of Ramzan and Eid days.
Describing about Kashmiri Hafiz Nagma, Balwant Thakur said that Kashmiri Hafiz Nagma is based on the classical music of Kashmir- the Sofiyiana Kalam.
