If we work well, we’ll be re-elected again in 2014 undoubtedly: Sonia

JAIPUR, Jan 20: Calling upon the Congress workers to work unitedly and in a disciplined manner in the run up to the 2014 general elections, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today said if they worked well and in a unified manner, the UPA was sure to come back to power in the Lok Sabha polls.
“There are just 15 months left for the general elections. If all of us work with full unity and in a disciplined manner, there is no reason why we will not be re-elected in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. If we work well, we will be re-elected again in the 2014 elections,” she said.
She was addressing 1,000 delegates of the AICC and members of the Congress Working Committee at the AICC meeting here, which will deliberate on the draft of the discussions at the Chintan Shivir.
Ms Gandhi said the biggest challenge before the party as it gears up for the next general elections is to put across a unified face before the people and act in a disciplined manner.
“Our biggest challenge is to put a unified face and present ourselves in a disciplined manner. We must all realise that the party’s triumph is the triumph of every individual,” she added.
Ms Gandhi, in a reference to protests across the country on the issue of corruption, said there was a pressing need to win back people’s faith in the government.
“We have to win back people’s faith and keep reinventing our policies,” Ms Gandhi said.
The Congress president said to win back faith of the people, there was a need to look at electoral reforms.
“We need to devise programmes to give legislative shape to these reforms. I am setting up a group in the party that will work on all the proposals in this regard,” she said.
Terming corruption as a deep rooted ‘malaise’ which affects all sections of the society, Ms Gandhi said the Congress should continue to lead a determined struggle to combat its effectively.
“Let me reiterate: corruption at all levels is a deep rooted malaise and all sections of the society are affected by it. We must, as a party, continue to lead a determined struggle to combat it effectively,” she added.
Ms Gandhi said in the past two years, the UPA government has made several efforts to eradicate corruption in public life.
“In the last AICC plenary held in Burari in December 2010, the major issue on the nation’s agenda was corruption and rightly so. I had placed a five-point action plan to deal with it. Since then, our Congress-led-UPA government has moved forward on the matter,” she said.
