SRINAGAR, Apr 12: The Department of Irrigation and Flood Control is set to complete the beautification project along the Jhelum River embankments, from Zero Bridge to LD Hospital, as part of Srinagar’s Smart City initiative, before April 20th.
In the first phase, the Jhelum embankments will be reshaped, with revetments receiving a new look. Public parks situated at the river bund will be developed and renovated, along with the renovation of ghats and the removal of silt from bunds.
According to Chief Engineer for Irrigation and Flood Control, Naresh Kumar, the beautification of Srinagar’s riverfront began six months ago, before the announcement that the city would host the G20 event.
“However, with the news of the event, the project has been accelerated to ensure that the riverfront is completed in time for the event. The aim is to complete the main works proposed under the Smart City project by April 20th, with other smaller works spilling over into the following month,” he said.
Kumar added that the embankments’ shape will also change in the coming days with the addition of cycle tracks on both sides and tiling work. “The beautification process involves treating the slopes, installing PCC bands, and laying stones,” he said.
The CE said about 40-45% of the physical work has been completed, with the main components expected to be completed before April 20th. The project has been divided into two phases, with the first phase’s priorities being fixed before moving on to the second phase. “Currently, only two tenders, worth Rs 32 and Rs 7 crores, have been issued,” he said.
Kumar further noted that the area around Zero Bridge has been particularly revitalized, with increased cleanliness and the addition of cycle tracks. “The beautification project’s main goal is to make the city more attractive, especially to tourists. The transformation of the riverfront has been widely noticed by the public,” he said.
“This is an important initiative as it would give this famous bund the necessary facelift and preserve its importance. It would also increase its aesthetic appeal and attract tourists as well. We are awaiting to see its completion,” a local said.
