JAMMU, Sept 6: Indira Gandhi National Open University is set to implement a dual degree programme that will allow a student pursuing a degree from any other University to enroll for a degree programme at IGNOU online or in the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode.
The decision was taken in the 78th Academic Council meeting of the University, which is implementing this provision for undergraduate as well as postgraduate degree programmes from the ongoing July 2022 admission session.
A student who has sought admission to one programme in regular/online/ODL in an Institution other than IGNOU will be permitted to simultaneously register in an ODL/online programme at IGNOU. However, there will be no change in examination schedule in case dates clash for any such programmes in which a student has taken admission.
If the student wants to do both degrees from IGNOU, he/she has to take admission in different admission cycles. IGNOU conducts admission in two cycles in a year, tentatively in June and December.
If a student registers for two such programmes wherein a certain number of courses are common, the credits of those courses will be given for one programme only. In such cases, students will be required to pursue similar courses for the other programme to complete it and earn a degree. In such a case, the university will make appropriate provisions for the selection of alternative courses.
However, technical courses falling under the gambit of regulatory bodies like All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE) and Indian Nursing Council (INC) dual degree programme will not be permitted for now. Similarly, courses running in collaboration with other institutions will also not be implemented.
“The provision has been made in addition to the current policy on pursuing two academic programmes simultaneously under which a student can pursue a certificate programme of six months duration along with any other programme of the university subject to a maximum of two programmes,” said Dr Sandeep Gupta, Regional Director In charge, Regional Centre Jammu. He also clarified that no retrospective benefit can be claimed by the students who have done two academic programmes simultaneously prior to the notification.
