JAMMU, Dec 22: Large numbers of vehicles were stranded between Udhampur and Chenani stretch of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway today as despite being down convoy (Srinagar to Jammu), few vehicles bound to Srinagar were also released. People remained trapped on the Highway for hours together.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police, Traffic, Alok Kumar has appealed to the people to check status of the National Highway before planning their journey by contacting Traffic Police Control Room or officials on duty.
Kumar said the people should also ask for down or up convoy days and related information on the Highway to plan their journey to avoid unnecessary inconvenience to them. He said some Srinagar bound vehicles dodged the Traffic Police personnel claiming that they had to go to Doda and Kishtwar but were on way to Kashmir. All such vehicles have been stopped at Chanderkoot and will be released only in the morning.
The IGP Traffic said there was down convoy on the National Highway today i.e. from Srinagar to Jammu but many vehicles left from Jammu for Srinagar and were stopped at Nagrota and Udhampur.
Kumar said there was traffic problem between Bali Nullah and Samroli on Udhampur-Chenani track. The Traffic Control Units’ telephone numbers are 2459048 and 9419147732 for Jammu, 9419993745 for Ramban and 2450022 and 9469807526 for Srinagar.
However, the commuters said there was massive traffic jam on Udhampur-Chenani stretch from 12 noon to 8 pm and the Traffic Police officials were completely missing to clear the jam. Commuters said it took four to five hours to them to cover the distance between Udhampur and Chenani.
“Traffic officials released the vehicles from both sides, thus, completely choking Udhampur-Chenani stretch of the Highway,” they said and appealed to the Traffic Police to deploy cops at vulnerable areas to keep the vehicles moving.
They appealed to the IGP Traffic to take stern action against the Traffic Police officials responsible for manning the traffic between Udhampur-Chenani stretch for their complete failure to regulate vehicular movement today.
