IIPA organizes 3rd S P Sahni Memorial Lecture on ‘Media and Governance’

Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 24: J&K Regional Branch of Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) today organized the 3rd Sat Paul Sahni Memorial Lecture on “Media and Governance”. Editor-in-Chief, Tribune, Raj Chengappa was the key speaker on the topic. Political Advisor to the Chief Minister, Devender Singh Rana was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr. S. S. Bloeria, Vice Chancellor, Central University Jammu in his address paid rich tributes to late Sat Paul Sahni and highlighted his contribution as a practicing journalist. Describing Sahni as a multifaceted and an eminent personality, he recollected his pioneering works in the field of journalism and said that his conduct during his entire professional life was exemplary. Delivering the key note lecture on ‘Media and Governance’, Mr. Chengappa described present age as ‘The Age of Electronics’ with far reaching implications. He said that with the explosion of media and the amount of Information flowing to the people the quality and reliability of news has come under serious debate. “Media Influences Minds” as such there is growing clamor for control over the media, he noted, adding that media especially in India faces wide opportunities as well as crisis. With millions of households watching over 600 channels the outreach of media in India has become phenomenal. Internet access has broken boundaries and we have witnessed convergence of audio, video and electronic texts in the palm of our hands making news a ‘Real Time’ phenomenon. Mr. Devender Singh Rana in his address said that with technology serving as a catalyst society is undergoing renaissance and everyone in the country wants to know what is happening. He said that media should have an inbuilt mechanism to set a model code of ethics governing its conduct. Earlier, Dr. Ashok Bhan, Chairman IIPA delivered the welcome address and said that the memorial lecture is a humble tribute to the immense contribution of late Sat Paul Sahni to the society. Among others Principal Secretary, Home, B. R. Sharma, Member PSC, K. B. Jandial, Director Information, Zaffar Ahmed, Prem Sahni, Padma Sachdev and Honorary Secretary IIPA, J. B. S. Johar senior officers of Police and civil administration besides prominent personalities from media and civil society were present on the occasion.
