IIT Jammu celebrates Jan Jatiya Gaurav Divas

JAMMU, Nov 25: The Indian Institute of Technology Jammu embarked on a transformative three-day Jan Jatiya Gaurav Divas celebration, dedicated to the legendary tribal leader Bhagwan Birsa Munda.
Organized under the aegis of Director IIT Jammu, Prof Manoj Singh Gaur, the event catered to an inclusive education and skill development of tribal students, including Gujjars and Bakarwals, from the remote tribal belts of the Jammu region.
The program was initiated with a floral tribute to Birsa Munda by Dean, Social Welfare Office, Prof Uma Shankar, Dr Quleen Kaur Bijral, HSS faculty and Daksh Dev, Communication Officer symbolizing respect and remembrance of the tribal visionary.
A morning walk tour of the campus and plantation activity conducted by Col Rathore offered students an insight into the vibrant academic environment of IIT Jammu. Theatre activities focusing on confidence-building exercises were conducted by Neeraj Kant from Natrang, providing a creative outlet for self-expression.
Dr Javed Rahi, Editor, J&K Academy, gave a presentation on the history and legacy of the Gujjars and Bakarwals while providing a vital connection to the tribal heritage all over the world.
Cultural enrichment was a key aspect of the event, with mesmerizing SPIC MACAY performances by renowned artists Shubendra Rao on the sitar and Rani Khanam in Kathak. These performances not only entertained but also connected the students to the rich cultural heritage of India.
Dr Quleen Kaur Bijral, HSS Faculty, led a session on communication and interpersonal skills, which are critical for the student’s holistic development. Dr Amitash Ojha and Parmveer Nandal provided a wholesome session on the importance of critical thinking. Practical skills development was addressed through computer training, mechanical workshops, and tinkering lab sessions.
Dr Shrikanta Banerjee from AIIMS Jammu presented medical insights on hygiene and sanitation, while a biology lab session furthered scientific curiosity among the students. Dr Riya Bhowmik’s discourse on the importance of STEM in education highlighted the role of science and technology in modern learning.
This event was orchestrated with the dedicated efforts of team members comprising Vishal Bagnehal, Himanshu Kumar, Arjun Chaudhary, and Majid Majeed.
