JAMMU, Sept 20: Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) Department, IIT Jammu in its first bi-monthly talk series titled ‘Dialogue Over A Cuppa’ (DOAC) conducted an interactive session by Dr Joby Varghese, faculty of Philosophy, IIT Jammu.
The topic of the session was ‘The Relevance of Trolley problem in Today’s World of Technology’. The talk focused on the Trolley problem as a thought experiment which allows us to think through the consequences of an action.
The crux of the talk was how machines can make moral decisions and what we can do against the major challenge of quantifying societal expectations vis-à-vis the ethical principles that guide machine behavior.
In Question-Answer session, students debated on the need of embracing the challenges of Machine Ethics as a unique opportunity. Dr Quleen Kaur Bijral (HoD, HSS) concluded the session while drawing on the ethical implications palpable in contemporary society from the triage system in hospitals to self-driving cars and so on.
Dr Bhumika R, Dr Suchismita and Dr Samrat R also expressed their views. The session was coordinated by Ishita Mahajan.
