IITs, NITs without Chairman and Board of Governors

According to the Ministry of Education, seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and 22 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) currently have vacant Chairperson positions. These positions are honorary and involve presiding over the Boards of Governors (BoGs) of the respective institutions. The Chairperson position in some IITs has been assigned to the Chairperson of other IITs with the approval of the institute’s Visitor, while Directors of NITs preside over BoGs until new nominations are made. Various BOG member positions are also vacant in 11 IITs and 30 NITs, with 14 NITs awaiting nominations from their state Governments. The post of chairman of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) is the most responsible post for providing guidance, direction, and leadership to the institution. They work closely with the Board of Governors, directors, and faculty members to oversee the academic, administrative, and financial operations of the institute. The chairman plays a crucial role in providing strategic direction to the institution, including setting goals and objectives, formulating policies and procedures, and developing long-term plans for growth and development. Promoting research and innovation, attracting and retaining talented faculty members, and providing a conducive environment for learning and growth are the assigned tasks for the chair. The Chairman oversees the financial operations of the institution, including budgeting, fundraising, and managing resources effectively. The chairman is supposed to work closely with industry partners, Government agencies, and other stakeholders to develop partnerships and collaborations. Filling up these vacant positions with suitable eminent persons is a continuous process that is currently under active consideration by the designated authorities. One hopes that keeping in view the importance of the chairman, all vacant posts get filled at the earliest along with BOGs.
