IMD stays at forefront for observing, forecasting weather: DG

JAMMU, Apr 16: Director General (DG), Indian Meteorology Department (IMD) Dr LS Rathore today inaugurated, new MeT office at Bantalab.
While speaking, Dr Rathore said that weather information, especially forecasts and warnings, have significant impacts on the economy and critical for the protection of life and property. As the primary official provider of weather and climate services in India, it is imperative that IMD stays at the forefront of technologies for observing, forecasting, and understanding the weather, he added.
Dr Rathore said that the technological innovation is essential to take advantage of the benefits of global research, which have made huge advances in the past two decades.
He said that IMD has installed 20 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) in J&K, representing various districts of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.
IMD has also established 4 Agrometeorological Field Units- one each in the 4 Agro-climatic regions of the States and one in Jammu in collaboration with Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences Technology (SKUAST)-Jammu.
The services of IMD in successful management of Shri Amarnath Yatra were duly acknowledged by the management of the yatra, Dr Rathore added.
Dr OP Singh, DyDG, IMD has informed that this year IMD will install 3 more AWS enroute holy cave.
A Doppler Weather Radar has also been planned at Srinagar under Himalayan Meteorological Programme and the same will be realized in next 5 months, DyDG informed.
Earlier, Sonam Lotus, Head of Met Office, J&K read the welcome address, whereas in the end, MK Pandita, Officer Incharge of Met Office Jammu, presented vote of thanks.
The function was attended by officers from various State and Central Government agencies, while other senior officials of IMD were also present.
