JAMMU, July 20: Indigenous Medicines Organization (IMO) has sought attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards second class treatment meted out to Indian System of Medicines in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a letter written to PM, Dr Mahesh Sharma, general secretary of IMO Jammu said that it is very painful to see that Ayurveda is being given second class treatment and Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India as well as Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) is sleeping over the matter despite prescribed guidelines and norms for Ayurvedic/Unani College.
“After struggle of years, Jammu was given an Ayurvedic College with the continuous efforts of MoS in PMO Dr Jitendra Singh but despite getting huge grants from Ministry of AYUSH, Government has not even created posts for this functional college till date and same is the case with Unani College of Srinagar,” Sharma said.
He said doctors from periphery are being called to take teaching assignments in these two colleges, which is a mockery on the part of Medical Education. Sharma further said that as per rules of CCIM, the Principal and academic staff for Ayurveda College should be from Ayurveda/Unani/Siddha systems but instead of appointing an eligible candidate as Principal of Ayurevda College Jammu, the authorities in J&K gave charge to Principal, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, which is a grave irregularity.
“Further, for Unani College, the charge of Principal was with a technocrat having PG degree in Unani Medicines but yesterday, the charge was given to Principal of GMC Srinagar,” Sharma said, adding that doctors from western system cannot do justice with ISM. He said IMO Jammu is of the opinion that a state of the art college needs a proper infrastructure as per CCIM Act to produce well qualified Ayurveda/Unani doctors.
He appealed the PM to look into the matter and order immediate creation of infrastructure and removal of principals with the degree of the other Medical Systems.
