Opening of Ayakar Seva Kendra in Jammu is described as a step by the Income Tax Department to create data bank for each assessee. Interface between the senior functionaries of Income Tax Department led by Chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes and the representatives of trade organizations in Jammu was meant to apprise the tax payers of the intentions of the Government to modernize tax realization system and make it simpler for the tax payers to file in their returns etc. and for the department to examine the details of each assessee. Tax evasion is a crime but there are still many in our country that would want to evade paying taxes. The Chairperson revealed that out of a population of 120 crore only 3.50 crore paid taxes. The question is that the development of the country depends on the level of income from taxes paid by the people under rules. Since tax evasion is endemic in our country, the authorities are left with no choice but to tighten the screw and bring all tax evaders under the purview of the tax realization mechanism. The magnitude of tax evasion is reflected by the fact that till the month of March over 1.05 lakh letters were issued in the cases of high value transactions, which were not reflected by the concerned assessee intentionally with the hope that they would go scot-free.
We appreciate the initiative of the CBDT towards modernizing tax realization process in a manner that it becomes possible to minimize direct interface between the assessee and the tax assessing authority. All conscientious and law abiding citizens who know that paying income tax is an obligation one has to fulfill will welcome the change and improvement of the system under contemplation at the level of Central Board of Direct Taxes as indicated by its chairperson.
