IMS committed to advanced meteorological research: Dr Tariq

SRINAGAR, Mar 23: The Indian Meteorological Society (IMS), Srinagar today reaffirmed its commitment to advancing meteorological research and fostering collaboration between scientists and policymakers to improve disaster preparedness in the region.
The IMS said this during a seminar organised here today to mark World Meteorological Day, focusing on the theme “Closing the Early Warning Gap Together.”
A spokesperson of the IMS said the event brought together experts, researchers, and professionals to discuss advancements in meteorology, disaster preparedness, and climate resilience. “The seminar was hosted online and featured insightful talks from distinguished speakers,” he said.
The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Tariq Abdullah, Head of the Department of Geomatics and Planning at IUST and Joint Secretary of IMS Srinagar Chapter. He emphasized the importance of meteorological research in disaster risk reduction.
The Lead Talk was given by Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice-Chancellor of IUST and Chairman of IMS Srinagar Chapter, who stressed the need to strengthen early warning systems and leverage scientific advancements to mitigate climate-related disasters.
The keynote address was presented by Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Scientist-D at IMD and Secretary of IMS Srinagar Chapter. He provided insights into recent meteorological developments and their implications for climate change adaptation and disaster preparedness.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sumira Nazir Zaz, Coordinator, Department of Environment, Sustainability, and Climate Change at IUST and Treasurer of IMS Srinagar chapter.
