JAMMU, Nov 2: The 100-bedded State Cancer Institute (SCI) Jammu, which is at present functioning with only Daycare Chemotherapy and OPD services, is all set to start IPD services from coming Monday and the Hospital management has completed all arrangements for smooth functioning of the indoor services.
The OPD services were started in the SCI Jammu on February 4 this year on the occasion of World Cancer Day, with an aim to provide doorstep treatment to the cancer patients from all over the Jammu region. The services were inaugurated by Secretary Health & Medical Education Department Bhupinder Kumar.
Following this, Daycare Chemotherapy services were started in the Institute on February 20 but even after the passage of over eight months, the Institute couldn’t move beyond OPD services and Daycare Chemotherapy due to shortage of doctors.
However, as per sources, some posts of Medical Officers and Medical Oncologists have been filled in recent months which is sufficient to start the IPD services in the Institution and therefore, the Hospital administration has decided to launch them from November 6.
Confirming the development, Principal and Dean, GMC Jammu, Dr Ashutosh Gupta, said that they have made all arrangements for beginning the IPD services from November 6. He said this has become possible only as in the recent months, 3 posts of Medical Officers and 2 posts of Medical Oncologists have been filled. Dr Gupta said they are hopeful that remaining posts will be fulfilled very soon as the process for the same is underway.
The Principal further informed that by the end of this month, advance medical equipments including PET Scan, Linear Accelerators with IMRT, IGRT, SRT facility, Brachytherapy Machine and CT Simulator will be installed and made functional in the Institute for the benefit of the cancer patients. “Our aim is to provide advance cancer care services to the people of Jammu region so that they should not have to go outside J&K for any type of cancer treatment,” he asserted.
Medical Superintendent of SCI Jammu, Dr Deepak Kumar said, “On November 6, they are going to start indoor services and soon other left out services will be commenced. He said the High-End Digital X-Ray, Colour Doppler as well as laboratory services will also be started soon. He said the collection centres for various types of samples are already there but the processing of these samples is being done in Super Speciality Hospital, Jammu.
Responding to a question on number of patients attending the OPD services, Dr Deepak said that as on average 20 to 25 patients avail the OPD services in SCI Jammu on daily basis but presently the patients needing admissions have to go to GMC Jammu. However, he said after the commencement of IPD services here from November 6, no patient has to go to GMC Jammu for getting indoor services.
Dr Deepak said that within next few months, all types of cancer care services will be provided under one roof in State Cancer Institute Jammu and to achieve this target, Secretary H&ME Bhupinder Kumar and Principal GMCH Jammu Dr Ashutosh Gupta are doing their best.
