Income Tax target

In a press interaction Income Tax Commissioner, J&K Circle, A K Thatai disclosed that Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has set a target of Rs 656 crore tax collections from Jammu and Kashmir during the current financial year (2012-13). During the previous financial year, income tax to the tune of Rs 617 crore was realized against the target of about Rs 580 crore. This could be an encouraging sign for the IT of J&K Circle but the discouraging sign is that according to his statement, as on April 1, 2012, the tax arrears were to the tune of Rs 442.92 crore and the net collective demand of Rs 4.56 crore has been raised by the Department. “As far as rest of the amount is concerned, there are some disputes and the court cases and the same would be realized only after the final decision on appeals”, he added. Tax arrears being so large, it would be in fitness of things if the IT conducts a study why the arrears run in such large figures and how the issue could be solved so that there is minimum litigation.  Large arrears demand that tax realization process in the State needs some fundamental modifications. The IT Commissioner and his staff should take note of this observation. It is very right on the part of the Commissioner to assure the assessees that no injustice or high-handedness will be tolerated in assessments but at the same time no tax evading will be allowed. Conscientious citizens pay taxes as per rules and feel proud to be good and honest citizens.
