The construction of the Badminton Sports Stadium in Arnia Tehsil, Jammu, has been halted after residents raised concerns about its shape and height. The residents have been demanding that work on the indoor stadium be resumed according to national standards. The project, which started in 2018-19 under the Border Area Development Programme, had an estimated cost of Rs 15 lakh. However, after spending around half of the allocated amount, the work was put on hold due to public resentment. Constructing sports infrastructure is indeed a priority, as it plays a crucial role in promoting sports and providing opportunities for athletes. However, it is essential to adhere to standard norms and regulations to ensure that the facilities are suitable for professional players and meet the required standards. Players had hoped for improved sports infrastructure in rural areas. These projects were seen as a source of new hope and venues for various sports activities, with the potential to contribute to the eradication of drug abuse and other social issues.
The decision to proceed with a project involving nonstandard sports facilities is a serious matter. There can be no compromise on the safety, functionality or suitability of the sports facilities for professional athletes. It is important for the authorities responsible for sports infrastructure development to prioritise adherence to standard norms, as this ensures the provision of high-quality facilities that can benefit professional players and contribute to the overall development of sports in the region. Unfortunately, there are many instances where sports infrastructure lacks essential facilities, such as drinking water, power backup, and coaching staff, preventing players from utilising the facilities effectively. These issues can significantly hinder the development and progress of athletes and the overall sports ecosystem. Repeated representations to sports authorities regarding these concerns should ideally prompt them to take the necessary actions to address these issues. Authorities must prioritise the well-being and needs of athletes by providing the required facilities and support systems.
