Increase retirement age of varsity scientists: SKUAST teachers

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, June 14: A joint meeting of office bearers of SKUAST-J and SKUAST-K Teaching Associations was held through video conferencing in which both the associations appealed Chief Minister, who is Pro chancellor of both the Universities to increase the retirement age of varsity scientists up to 65 years, with the provision of extension up to the age of 70, as per norms of the University Grants Commission (UGC), by considering the matter in the forth coming Cabinet.
While addressing the meeting, SKUAST-J President, Dr Vikas Sharma, expressed his gratitude to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his personal intervention and accepting the disparity in the retirement age of the faculty of Central Universities and State Universities.
He said, “We welcome the decision of the State Government to enhance the retirement age of State employees from 58 to 60 years for aligning their service conditions with those of Central employees” and wanted the State Government to take the same action with regard to teachers with Universities in the State and bring their service conditions, including age of retirement, at par with those of employees with Central Universities, as laid down by the UGC.
Dr Sharma further pointed out that this is the long pending demand of University Scientists but authorities opined to defer the decision till the State Government enhanced the age of superannuation of its employees from 58-60 years.
Dr Vivak M Arya, general secretary of SKUAST-J, appealed CM to consider the genuine demand put forth by both the associations.
