JAMMU, May 25: The farmers of Jammu have demanded increasing of time for retail sale of vegetables, fruit and flowers in retail market all over the UT as they have been put to a huge loss due to ongoing Corona curfew and less timing of sale in the retail market.
The J&K Kisan Council which held a virtual meeting here today to discuss the problems being faced by farmers in selling their produce in retail markets have made an appeal to Lt Governor, Manoj Sinha in this regard seeking his immediate intervention in the matter.
The meeting was chaired by Kisan Council J&K, president, Tejinder Singh who expressed his concern over the plight of farmers of J&K and said they have suffered a huge loss during the Corona period.
Farmers said that their produce which forms the part of essential commodities and fall under the category of perishable goods need special attention from the Government. They said in view of closure of retail market by 10 am the farmers produce including vegetable, fruit, flowers and milk get perished and they are put to loss.
They said Government needs to look into the matter and increase time slot for retailers like neighbouring Punjab where retailers remain open upto 5pm and not upto 10 am as in J&K.
Moreover they demanded that there should be a constant check in the rate both in wholesale and retail markets of vegetables and fruit by Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department (FCS&CA).
They also demanded vaccination of farmers from 18 to 44 age group as they are also in high risk category.
The farmers urged upon the Government and Administration that the suggestion of the Kisan Council be given due consideration in the interest of farming community and the consumer public in general.
