JAMMU, Feb 1: Dr Romesh Khajuria, Chairman of the Wool and Woollen Export Promotion Council (WWEPC) under the Ministry of Textiles, GoI and Chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Wool Development and Marketing Association (JKWDMA) today highlighted the significant role played jointly by India and Australia in the emerging sustainable wool and wool-blended products market at a global level.
Addressing a delegation of primary wool growers from Australia, Dr Khajuria emphasized the growing potential of the wool market, noting that the global winter wear market is expected to rise from $ 330 billion in 2023 to $ 440 billion by 2030. This surge presents ample opportunities for woollen manufacturers and exporters worldwide.
Khajuria pointed out that India and Australia have highly complementary economies.
“Australia provides essential raw commodities and resources, along with advanced skills and technologies, while India serves as a hub for textile manufacturing and innovation,” he said and stressed the importance of collaboration, saying, “Produced in Australia, made in India and exported to the world.”
In response to a question from one of the Australian wool growers, Khajuria explained that the Indian woollen industry manufactures a wide range of wool and wool-blended products. With India’s wool export target set at $ 2.5 billion by 2030, he noted that the demand for raw wool in India is expected to rise to 250,000 tonnes to meet both domestic and export needs.
The Australian delegation, which consisted of 46 primary wool growers from Victoria and New South Wales, is currently on a six-day exposure tour to India.
The aim of the visit is to strengthen ties with Indian industry stakeholders and foster deeper collaboration between the two nations.
The delegation, led by Karee Wool is an Australian family-owned and independent wool brokerage company is on a fact-finding mission to learn about the processing and manufacturing of Australian wool in India.
The group has already visited various processing and manufacturing centers across Mumbai, Gujarat, Delhi/NCR, Chandigarh and Ludhiana, where they had in-depth discussions with Dr Khajuria on industry challenges and opportunities.
Alister Carr, representing Fox & Lillie Australia (which acquired Karee Wool in September 2024), presented a momentous honour to Dr Romesh Khajuria, marking the significance of this partnership.
