India, China agree to work for peace in border areas

NEW DELHI :  India and China today agreed to work  together to maintain peace and tranquility in border areas in  line with previous agreements and reaffirmed sensitivities  for each other’s concerns and aspirations.
A joint statement issued after talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang said the two countries view each other as partners for mutual benefit and not as rivals or competitors.
The Chinese Premier who arrived here yesterday, held talks with Dr Singh on all issues of mutual, regional and global concern.
The two sides said they would further strengthen cooperation on trans-border rivers.
They also agreed to consider the potential for a bilateral Regional Trade Arrangement and review the state of negotiations on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
It was agreed to take measures to address the issue of trade imbalance while striving to realise the trade turnover target of 100 billion dollars by 2015.
The Chinese side said they would provide greater facilitation to Indian pilgrims for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.
Two sides also agreed to consult the other parties for establishing a joint study group on strengthening connectivity in the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) region.
They would also encourage Special Representatives (SRs) on the border issue to push forward the process of negotiations for resolving the dispute.
On Afghanistan, both the countries agreed to support an ‘Afghan-led, Afghan-owned’ reconciliation process. (agencies)
