India, China considering additional CBMs for border peace

NEW DELHI: India and China are considering additional confidence building measures to ensure that peace and tranquility was maintained on the border.
The issue was discussed during the Special Representatives talks on Boundary question held in Beijing in the backdrop of the recent incursion of the Chinese Troops in India in Depsan in Ladakh which led to a 15-day standoff between the two countries last month.
The talks between National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon and Mr Yang Jiechi, State Councillor, which concluded today were described by the Ministry of External Affairs as “productive, constructive and forward-looking”.
The Special Representatives continued their discussions on a framework for a resolution of the Boundary Question, which constitutes the second step of a three-stage process.
“As directed by the Prime Ministers of India and China, the Special Representatives also discussed the maintenance of peace and tranquility in the India-China border areas including possible
additional confidence building measures,” the MEA said.
The two also discussed ways and means of strengthening existing mechanisms for consultation and coordination on border affairs and methodology to enhance the efficiency of communications between the two sides.
They also reviewed the status of bilateral relations in the wake of the recent landmark visit to India of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, and discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest.
