NEW DELHI : Senior officials of India and China today started the two-day deliberations to plug the gaps in border mechanism so that recurrence of Chumar-like face-offs between the armies of the two countries can be effectively prevented. The officials were discussing various measures that may help prevent the problem of incursions on the 4000-km long unsettled boundary, official sources said.
The dialogue is be held under the framework of ‘Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC)’.
The Indian side at WMCC meet was being led by the Joint Secretary (East Asia) in the External Affairs ministry. Representatives of the Ministries of External Affairs, Defence and Home, as well as members of the Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police are part of the Indian delegation, sources said. The meeting comes at a time when India’s announcement to build a highway from Tawang to Vijaynagar has irked Beijing. China is likely to raise the issue in the meeting, while the Indian side would flag its concern over the Chinese road infrastructure being built on the other side, which in many cases, was intruding India’s perception of the boundary.
