India launches AWACS programme, deals worth Rs 10,000 cr cleared

NEW DELHI, Mar 28:  In what could be seen as a formal launch  of India’s own full-blown futuristic AWACS (Airborne Warning And  Control System) programme, the Defence Ministry today approved a  proposal for purchasing two Airbus-330 aircraft for Rs 5,100  crore, that will be used as its aerial platform .     The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, in a meeting held here gave its nod to the proposal along with three other defence deals of total worth of around Rs 10,000 crores.
Sources in the Ministry said the procurement proposals for mine ploughers and truck mounted lifting devices for the Army and Harpoon missiles for the Navy has also got the clearance of DAC.
Sources said 30 Weapon Locating Radar (WLR)-Swati- will be purchased for the Army from the Government-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for Rs 1,605 crores.      In addition to this, the Army has also got green signal from the government to buy 220 truck mounted lifting device systems that having a lift capability of close to 1000 kg. The proposal will cost Army Rs 2400 crores.
A proposal to arm HDW submarines of the Navy with Harpoon missiles was also cleared by the DAC.     Under the proposal, 22 such missiles will be purchased from Boeing company of US for Rs 913 crores.  (UNI)
