NEW DELHI, Dec 7:
Most of the Indian drug-making companies were doing a fine job and the Government had taken several steps to check the problem of spurious and sub-standard drugs in the country, the Lok Sabha was informed today.
Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said during Question Hour that the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, was amended by the Drugs and Cosmetics (Amendment) Act, 2008, to provide more stringent penalties for manufacture and trade of spurious and adulterated drugs.
He said certain offences were even made cognizable and non-bailable.
The Minister said even the WHO had condemned, many a time, media reports that India manufactured drugs were of sub-standard.
“Five hundred drug-making units are supplying drugs to the US and many other Indian drug-making companies exporting drugs to over 140 countries,” the Health Minister said adding that all was not bad in the sector.
He said drugs were more affordable in India than anywhere else in the world.(UNI)
