Indian Health Care Sector

Triveni Sidha
“Health should be Priority otherwise Deaths will be in Majority”.
Health is one of the largest sectors of India both in terms of capital and employment. Health according to WHO is defined as the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Health care comprises of Hospitals, Clinics, Telemedicine, E-medicine, Medical devices and equipment and as well as health insurances.
Now if we see behind the curtain of Indian Health sector, it is slightly different by other countries. Indian Health care system is growing at a rapid pace. It is only because of strengthening efforts of health care professionals, budget, and media coverage, services and great contribution by both public and private sectors.
How Indian Health system is BEST?
The Indian health sector is 145th among 195 in terms of quality and accessibility of health care but still has some good segments of treating human population:
* Hospitals- As told earlier, it consists of Government Sector (healthcare centres, district hospitals and general hospitals) and private sector ( nursing homes, mid-tier and top-tier hospitals)
* Pharmaceuticals- It includes manufacturing, extraction, processing, purification and packaging of chemical material for use as medications for humans or animals.
* Medicines- Excellence of both Ayurveda and allopathic medications to treat a human body.
* Diagnostic- It comprises laboratories that offer best analytical or diagnostic services, including body fluid analysis.
* Medical equipment and Supplies- Includes establishments of surgical, dental, orthopaedics, ophthalmologic, laboratory instruments.
* Medical Insurance- It includes health insurances and medical reimbursements, covering an individual hospitalisation expenses incurred due to sickness.
* Telemedicine- It has enormous potential in meeting the challenges of health care delivery to rural and remote areas besides several other applications in education, training and management in health sector.
* Health information Technology is expected to grow 1.5 times by 2020.
UPGRADED INDIA: HEALTH SECTOR IN 2050-
Indian demographic and epidemiology profile will witness an evolution by 2050 which will demand health care system to upgrade. In 2050 population is projected to be 1.7 billion and average life expectancy at 80+ years. The old age population is expected to grow to 14%(4% at present) with geriatric health care specialized services such as dementia, nutritional services and home care services expected to have a larger role.
BUT WHAT INDIAN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM LACKS?
* Healthcare is a fundamental right, but it is not fundamentally right in India.
* Sector attracts investments, but delivery remains contentious.
* Among the cheapest in the world, yet unaffordable for most locally.
* Less than one doctor 1,000 patients, but medical tourism booms.
* Stark divergence in healthcare outcomes within country.( 100’s of children died in Uttar Pradesh last year, but Kerala managed to contain the deadly Nipah Virus outbreak within weeks.
* Child marriage is still going in some parts of the country that results in mental imbalances.
* Women health is still a question that needs to be raised. (100 are women who die because of premature pregnancies, health issues and unhygienic conditions during menstruation).
* Lack of technology to serve better in field of paediatrics and obstetrics excellently.
* Lack of health care professionals.
* Lack of tremendous health care centres.
May be we are living in 21st century but India still lacks many things in the health care services and the sector. There is a rapid pace but India is not getting the appropriateness in this sector even after spending a lot of budget on it. So, it’s the responsibility of us to make the every step worth. Take care of it because if we are healthy, we are alive. An up gradation of this sector is must and we being the lifestyle modifiers should know where we stand and how much we have to improve or lift the scale up in order to survive on this planet.
